Niche or not?
Niche or not?
Southern Living, Apr 2000
Look again That decorative niche in the wali is really just painted on. Interior designer Sandy Crawford wanted a niche for this short hall in her home in Winter Park, Florida. But there just wasn’t quite enough wall depth to create a real one. Instead the designer called in artists Lynell Payne and Peggy Bell to paint one.
Working directly on the wall surface, the artists painted the round– topped niche, fluted pilasters, shelf, and blue-and-white porcelain jar. Careful shading gives the painting the illusion of depth.
The French call this technique trompe l’oeil, which literally means to fool the eye
